Get to Know Joe Goettl

What inspired you to pursue your sport?

A combination of injuries led me to end my life long pursuit of slopestyle snowboarding and distance running. I first discovered cycling as an activity for physical therapy, but I quickly caught the bug and got into road racing. A few years later, I transitioned to off road racing through gravel and mountain biking, and I knew I’d found where I’m supposed to be. Off road cycling requires a combination of technical skills and flow which translated well from snowboarding, and a huge amount of endurance which I carried over from distance running. This sport is a true match for me.

What are your Go Beyond achievements and milestones in your sporting career?

The injuries which forced me away from my running and snowboarding also began a long, up and down battle with chronic pain. Not just the kind that hurts during activity, but rather 24/7. I’ve put countless amounts of resources into figuring out how to work through this pain, and I’ve landed on a few processes which have helped me greatly. My mission is to share what I’ve learned through this journey, helping others feel, move and live better.

Why did you choose to work with H2O Audio?

As an Athlete/Creative Video Producer, music plays a huge role in my life. It inspires me to get out the door for hard training rides when conditions are poor, but also stay relaxed on my easy rides. Additionally, I’m always searching for that next song I can pair to videos, trying to emulate the emotion I’m feeling during the races. I put a ton of passion into cycling and video production, and after testing out H20 Audio’s products and meeting the people behind it, I can tell they have built something special.

How has H2O Audio enhanced your training and performance?

My favorite product in the lineup, the Tri 2 Multi Sport Series Headphones, are wireless, bone conduction headphones. This design allows me to hear my surroundings when I’m training on the road, especially important for cars coming up from behind. Being wireless makes using them with cycling super easy, and the sound quality and volume goes up high enough to hear on the windiest of days.

What is your favorite music or playlist to listen to during workouts, and what type of workout do you use it for?

It all depends on the workout intensity. For the hardest of workouts, I’ll go with a combination of Rock and Rap:  For moderate efforts and fun mountain bike rides, I’ll go with a combination of more upbeat rap (think Fast and Furious) and Classic Rock. For long winter endurance rids on the road, I’ll bring in some Indie Rock, or put my entire library on shuffle.

Can you share a memorable moment or story from your training where using H2O Audio waterproof headphones made a significant difference?

The biggest difference I’ve noticed with The Tri 2 Multi Sport vs other open ear headphones I’ve tried is the increased audio quality and volume capabilities to be able to still hear my music on windy days. This is especially important for me going into the winter where I’ll spend long days on open flat roads in poor conditions.

How do H2O Audio waterproof headphones help you stay motivated during tough training sessions or competitions?
What advice do you have for aspiring athletes?

Have discipline and patience, but don’t let go of what brings you joy. Making a structured plan and sticking to it will help you move forward towards your goals faster. However, keep in mind that there will be setbacks, and reaching your goals almost never comes as fast as you’d like. In this process, remember what got you into your sport, the things about it that bring you joy, and keep these things in your schedule. For me, this would be adding in a long adventurous ride on my mountain bike, or participating in a local group ride.
