Every year, a select group of athletes gathers on the island of Molokaʻi with one goal: cross the legendary Kaiwi Channel and reach Oʻahu.
There are no buoy lines to follow. No calm water. No second chances.
Stretching more than 40 miles (64 km) across the Pacific Ocean, the Molokaʻi to Oʻahu (M2O) Foil World Championships are widely regarded as one of the most demanding ocean endurance events in the world. Success requires far more than physical fitness—it demands an understanding of wind, swell, current and the ability to adapt to constantly changing conditions.
The Ocean Decides
This year’s championship once again reminded everyone why the Kaiwi Channel commands so much respect.
Athletes started in favourable conditions before the race evolved into a true tactical battle. As the wind softened and the bumps became smaller through the middle stages of the crossing, competitors were forced to constantly adjust their lines, conserve energy and make split-second decisions that would ultimately determine their finishing positions.
By the final miles, the race became less about speed and more about resilience, experience and trusting the ocean.
Edo Tanas Makes It Three in a Row
Congratulations to Edo Tanas, who captured an incredible third consecutive Molokaʻi to Oʻahu Foil World Championship.
Despite a difficult start, Tanas remained composed, worked his way back through the field and trusted his race strategy.
Reflecting on his performance after the finish, he said:
“I just knew no one had a perfect race… I just tried to make no more mistakes and push all the way to the end.”
His victory is another remarkable achievement in one of ocean sport’s toughest disciplines.
Annie Reickert Goes Back-to-Back
On the women’s side, Annie Reickert successfully defended her title after making a last-minute equipment change before the start.
Managing challenging conditions throughout the crossing, she relied on patience, persistence and smart decision-making to reach Oʻahu first.
Speaking after the race, she described the challenge simply:
“It was brutal… I just grinded, left everything I had out there and I’m just glad to be on the beach.”
Her performance was another reminder that the Kaiwi Channel rewards preparation just as much as power.
Training for Challenges Like M2O
Events like M2O are built on thousands of hours of preparation long before athletes ever reach the start line.
Open-water swimmers, triathletes, paddlers and foilers spend countless early mornings training in unpredictable conditions, developing not only fitness but confidence and mental resilience.
For many endurance athletes, music plays an important role throughout that journey. The right playlist can create focus before sunrise sessions, provide rhythm during long endurance efforts and help maintain motivation when training becomes physically and mentally demanding.
That’s where the H2O Audio TRI 2 and TRI 2 Pro come in.
Designed specifically for swimming and open-water training, the TRI 2 Series combines bone conduction technology with onboard MP3 storage, allowing athletes to enjoy music in the water without needing to carry a phone. Whether you’re training in the pool, preparing for your next triathlon or building confidence for your first open-water event, the TRI 2 Series is built to keep you connected to your music every stroke of the way.
