Preparing for the Moloka‘i to O‘ahu Prone Paddle has consisted of thousands of hours on the water. I’m very fortunate to have Hawai‘i as my training ground. Besides the sunshine and warm water, the challenging and diverse conditions help prepare me for taking on the Kaʻiwi Channel.
Balancing training with my job as an Ocean Safety Lifeguard means every day counts. I work 4x 10.5-hour days a week, and that schedule keeps me active. Being on the beach, in the surf, and constantly moving helps build endurance and ocean awareness. On top of that, I’m surrounded by some of the best watermen and women. Whether we’re doing mock rescues, board sprints, or surf sessions, I’m lucky to train alongside people who push me every day. That’s been huge for motivation after long days in the sun.
Key workouts have included downwind paddles and high-intensity intervals. Downwind paddles help replicate linking swells and manage the pace. The intervals are the kind of efforts that simulate the rhythm and demands of the M2O race. Linking swells, managing pace, and keeping the mental focus locked in is everything. H2O Audio has enchanted my training. Being able to throw on music mid-paddle makes solo sessions feel less like a grind and more like a flow. It helps me stay present, keeps the energy high, and turns the tough days into productive ones.
