The countdown is officially on. The Moloka‘i to O‘ahu prone paddle race is on for July 27th, but before I even touch the paddleboard, I’ll be crossing the Pacific as part of the Transpac sailing race, starting July 5th.
Downwind sailing and downwind paddling have a lot of similarities. Both require you to read the ocean, anticipate movement, and respond quickly. It’s about knowing when to push, when to glide, and how to conserve energy while maximizing momentum. What I learn during Transpac, the feel of the ocean, the timing of the swells, translates directly into my mindset for Moloka‘i. It’s the same ocean, the same swell bumps, just a different craft.
When I’m paddling, I don’t have sails or a crew. It’s just me, my board, and my strength. That’s what makes it so personal. The challenge is physical, but it’s also mentally challenging. Staying in tune with the ocean, relying on my instincts, and staying strong when it gets heavy.
And through it all, H2O Audio keeps me focused. Whether I’m on long solo paddles or prepping between races, music helps center me. It keeps the pace, lifts the energy, and brings some rhythm to the chaos.
Two races. One month. One goal: Going beyond the finish and have fun!
