By: Jamal Hill, Paralympic Medalist
The off-season following a Paralympic Games often feels quieter. Many A-Team athletes use this time to recover, reflect, and take a well-deserved break from competition. This December’s National Championships for Paralympic Swimming mirrored that sentiment, with a reduced presence of top-tier athletes. For me, however, this “quiet” period has been anything but restful—it's been transformational.
I’ve dedicated this off-season to rebuilding my team and reshaping what success looks like, not just as an athlete but also as a leader, entrepreneur, and community member. Success at the highest levels of competition is never a solo endeavor. To win, you need a team. This realization has been pivotal as I push toward my goals for the LA 2028 Games and beyond.
A Unified Effort: From Coaches to Cutting-Edge Tech
Rebuilding my team starts with leveraging the incredible resources provided by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). It’s about aligning my in-person team in Los Angeles—my swim coach and strength and conditioning coach—with my remote team in Colorado Springs, including nutritionists, mental health experts, sleep specialists, and even team doctors. These professionals are not just working in silos but collaborating to refine every aspect of my performance, from sleep patterns to energy conservation strategies tailored to my disability.
This integration is critical to my evolution as an athlete. For instance, a sleep coach’s guidance on rest impacts how I recover between practices, while nutritional insights ensure that my body is fueled for peak performance. Each role is interconnected, creating a holistic system where every piece moves in harmony toward a shared goal: excellence.
Beyond the Podium: The Role of Partnerships
My team extends beyond coaches and experts. Sponsors like H2O Audio are equally critical to my journey. They’re not just believers in my mission but active participants in making my training more effective and enjoyable.
Swimming is a sport where solitude often defines the grind—hours in the pool, lap after lap. H2O Audio’s waterproof headphones have transformed those moments, turning time underwater into opportunities for inspiration. Whether it’s motivational speeches, playlists that drive me forward, or calming audio for recovery sessions, their technology enhances every aspect of my training. It’s not just about music—it’s about creating an environment where I can thrive, mentally and physically.
The Power of a Team
What I’ve learned during this off-season is that true champions don’t stand alone on the podium. Behind every medalist, there’s a team—sometimes visible, often unseen—that has worked tirelessly to achieve success. My journey toward the LA 2028 Games isn’t just about swimming faster; it’s about bringing together the right people, tools, and technologies to achieve something extraordinary.
This off-season has been about more than rebuilding my team—it’s about redefining what’s possible when a collective effort is fueled by shared vision and purpose. With the support of incredible partners like H2O Audio and a unified team, I’m not just preparing for competition—I’m preparing to dominate.
To my team—both in and out of the pool—thank you. Together, we’re not just chasing medals. We’re setting a new standard for what’s possible in the Paralympic movement.
